Larry Barnett is running in District 27
Describe the moment you decided to run for delegate
It took place during a Chesterfield County Democratic Committee meeting in February. Potential democratic candidates from each of the districts in Chesterfield were given the opportunity to speak. When it came time for the 27th, no one came forward. I almost jumped out of my seat, because I strongly believed we should have a challenger. Then I realized, if not me, who? Shortly after that, I decided I would run, and filed in March.
What is the #1 issue you want to work on in the legislature?
I am passionate about a few key issues, but expansion of health care is one of my central platform issues. This is an issue many of the local constituents voice concern about, and I will be their voice and advocate. As part of this, of course, I will serve as a champion for mental health and addiction issues, bringing an informed voice to the General Assembly.
What is the worst thing about your Republican challenger?
Simply put, it’s her overall voting record and her stance on the issues. We have very different viewpoints about how to serve and represent the people in this community. For a few examples: her pro-fracking bill, her support of discrimination against LGBT individuals, her opposition to expanding healthcare to Virginians, her vote to reduce funding for TANF recipients (poor women) to obtain contraceptives, and her dismal rating record on support for public education. The list goes on and on.
What is uniquely cool about your district?
The people. Without question. I have met so many interesting and engaging people since I decided to run for public office, giving me a much better understanding of this community. I look forward to being their voice, and serving all of the people in this community.
